SAIGON OPERA HOUSE
An iconic building standing magnificently at the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, the Saigon Opera House, also known as the Municipal Theater, is one of the most impressive sights in the city, both day and night. Built in the 1890s by French architect, the building remains a remarkable testament to colonial architecture.
From a distance, the Opera House resembles a grand and beautiful city gate. The architecture features stone-carved ornaments and statues at the entrance, crystal chandeliers and a shiny granite floor in the lobby – all crafted from materials imported from France. The graceful oval auditorium, with 468 seats, is designed to amplify performances both acoustically and visually, offering an echo-free environment and soundproofing from the outside city buzz.
The Saigon Opera House remains a symbol of the city’s cultural fusion and is one of the best-preserved architectural gems from the colonial era in Vietnam. Today, it serves as a venue for many high-profile events and cultural-entertainment activities, making it an integral part of Ho Chi Minh City's cultural life. It was certified as a national relic in 2012.
