VIETNAMESE BREAD (BÁNH MÌ)

Bánh mì is a famous street food in Ho Chi Minh City that combines French culinary influences with traditional Vietnamese ingredients. The name “bánh mì” refers to the type of bread used, which is a light, airy baguette, typically filled with various meats, vegetables and condiments.

The origin of bánh mì dates back to the 19th century, when the French baguette was modified in Vietnam. This popular Vietnamese dish usually consists of pork or chicken, pâté, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber slices, cilantro, mayonnaise and chili sauce, all placed inside a freshly baked golden-brown baguette.

In Vietnam, bánh mì is commonly enjoyed for breakfast or lunch, with vendors selling it on street corners throughout the country. Over the years, bánh mì has evolved internationally, with creative fusion versions that incorporate local ingredients and techniques. The bread’s versatility and balance of textures and flavors have made it a symbol of Vietnamese cuisine.
